Troponin is a complex of three regulatory proteins (Troponin C, Troponin I, and Troponin T) integral to muscle contraction in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Cardiac troponins I (cTnI) and T (cTnT) are specific to cardiac muscles and are very sensitive and specific markers for unstable angina and myocardial infarction. High-sensitivity cTnI (hs-cTnI) and cTnT (hs-cTnT) assays that are based on the two-site sandwich immunoassay principle have become the gold standard for diagnosing acute myocardial infarction and for risk stratification.
