Direct stool testing for Shiga toxin is NOT recommended by the CDC:
– Direct stool testing DISREGARDS the CDC Guidelines with the promotion of direct testing of EHEC patients
-Direct stool testing can lead to missed positives (false negatives) – this creates unnecessary use of contraindicated antibiotics
– EHEC results can be a matter of life and DEATH, direct testing is not worth the risk as a standard of care
